Observability is the degree to which a system's internal state can be understood from the signals and context it emits.
Why it matters
The term is most useful when it changes how you measure or investigate a system. Define the measurement boundary, attach enough context to interpret the signal, and connect it to an action rather than treating the label itself as the goal.
Example
When a new failure mode appears, responders can correlate metrics, traces, logs and release context to test hypotheses without first deploying new diagnostics.
